South Yorkshire Police was founded in 1974 due to the amalgamation of Metropolitan Boroughs and there are approximately 6,000 employees based in South Yorkshire.
A year ago, a new building was purchased to house the South Yorkshire Force's Call Centre. This meant new IT equipment - including monitors - had to be purchased which up until then had been bundled 17" CRT as standard. However, this new project initiated the evaluation of LCD monitors.
The requirement was for two screens per desk to run the Force's standard software applications and to be mounted on arms for user comfort. The monitors with the best dot pitch, viewing angle and brightness that suited the applications would be chosen. |

The evaluation process consisted of intensive technical testing by the Office System Analyst Team - Martin Lee, Peter Biggin and Steve Franks. The team firstly tested the monitors configured with the required applications. The response time was then tested with different types of video media. Other tests included picture quality, viewing angles as well as the ergonomic features. Health and safety benefits such as power use and the amount of space on the desk were also considered. Once the technical testing had been done, the LCD monitors were then placed on the users' desks to provide real life feedback. Other SYP (South Yorkshire Police) staff were also called in from other operational offices to take a look at the monitors. |

| South Yorkshire Police started the evaluation process with four brands of LCD monitors. When South Yorkshire started to evaluate the EIZO 18" L665, they soon realized that this was the perfect monitor for them. The higher quality image was immediately obvious as well as the excellent viewing angle. The EIZO also handled the colours that the applications used so much better than the competitors. |

| Primarily, the LCD project involved the new building and the Call Centre. However, since then other monitors have been purchased by ISD (Information Systems Department) which is the IT section for the whole force. "The Enquiry Desks in the area are now after them, due to the lack of space they take up", said Peter Biggin. "Purchasing of LCDs has now started to filter out to other parts of the organization." ISD have now got a new system in place. When a request is made for a new PC (which comes with bundle 17" CRT), they can now purchase an EIZO LCD (usually 15" instead to go with it. "EIZO will be the only LCD option - the size and specification of the monitor will depend on the requirement of the user", added Peter. |

 Installation Made Easy
With LCD weighing much less than the bulky CRT monitors, installation of the 260 x EIZO L665 monitors was made easy. The fact that the connections were readily accessible on the back of the monitor, made mounting the LCDs on the new arms painless. Installation of the monitors along with the PCs and arms was done over three days. "We only had one problem and that was sorted out in no time. Installation was very straightforward", said Martin Lee. |

| Top Quality Monitors and Service! |
 The service Martin Lee and his team received from EIZO was excellent. "Although we purchase our IT equipment via our preferred reseller, we still maintain a very good relationship with EIZO", explained Martin. "We had an issue with the graphics card working with the EIZO panel. We told our EIZO account manager and he very quickly and efficiency solved this for us. An example of the excellent service we received was the right panel being recommended to us. The original EIZO panel we evaluated was going to be a higher specification than we required so EIZO then suggested a different monitor more suited to our needs and budget. The current climate means that cost is always an important factor, but value for monitor and total cost of ownership has to be considered." Martin explained. |

| "We have been extremely happy with the EIZO panels. The thin bezel makes the call centres look smart and good on the desks. These are very reliable monitors. The high quality means we can have confidence there wouldn't be any technical issues. Since installation we haven't had any calls to helpdesk with monitor queriesÅE explained Peter Biggin, Office Systems Analyst. The new call centre has windows all around the building. Reflection could have been a problem if CRTs were still being used, however the EIZO LCD monitors ensures this is no longer an issue. |
