300 FlexScan Monitors Installed in Cutting-Edge Auction Hall
NASA Auto Auctions successfully implemented an aggressive overhaul by introducing the latest image and information-based auction system. We interviewed Messrs. Shuji Iinuma of Education Industries Co. and Hiroaki Nakaya of Fujitsu Kiden Ltd., who were placed in charge of building this system, and Toshihiko Muraki, president of NASA Auto Auctions, about why they adopted this system and how it has enabled them to offer a better and more efficient service.

Video Image System Accommodates the Bidding of 1500 Cars Per Day
Just ten seconds per car. That's the maximum allowed bidding time for cars today. To cope with an average of 1500 cars and a maximum of 2500 cars per day, the bidding time per car had to be shortened. Among the approximately 160 auction halls nationwide, large sites that handle more than 1500 cars per day are using video images to aid in the bidding process. A specialist in bidding systems, Mr. Nakaya says, "The key factor over the past two years has been the shift over to the use of video and photographic images." Up till now, NASA Auto Auctions drove the actual cars along the roadway at the front of the auction room, displayed the information on an overhead projector screen at the front, and set up a board indicating the prices. President Muraki says, "I really wanted to reduce the time taken up by this 'car parade.' I also wanted to make use of the Internet for those who cannot visit the auction rooms." Moreover, he also wanted to show an image of the actual car and related information at the bidding seat, and not just on the screen at the front of the auction room. EIZO's FlexScan LCD monitors were chosen to make this possible.

PhotoThe photographs of cars for auction are shot entirely at NASA studios, and the captured images are distributed to bidding seats together with an assessment sheet prepared by an inspector. EIZO FlexScan L350 wide viewing angle displays are used as two people can view a single monitor simultaneously. Mr. Iinuma says, "As auctions start at 10 A.M. and last until 7 P.M., a screen that causes little eye fatigue over extended viewing periods was required. Moreover, we wanted to use existing desks, so we needed an installation that requires little space and allows the dealer to view the display at a downward angle. Ease of installation was another reason for choosing EIZO displays.

300 Displays All Completely Operative When Started up Simultaneously
PhotoAccording to Mr. Nakaya, "When you have a mass installation like this, sometimes some of the displays do not display anything when they are all powered on together which requires extra adjustments. However, with EIZO displays, this is not a problem." Mr. Muraki added, "After we installed EIZO displays, the auto adjust functions almost eliminated the need for extra adjustments. We also used EIZO protection panels as visitors to the auction would probably directly touch the screen. Even with these panels fitted on the screen, colors did not change and were as good as they were before. The screens require very little maintenance, which greatly reduces the amount of time we must devote to technical support."

NASA Auto Auction needed reliable displays for their new interactive system. The high quality standards of EIZO displays have helped this mass installation to be a major success.
